Vizianagaram District was formed as 23rd district in the State with some parts carved from the neighboring districts of Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam, on 1st June, 1979 with Headquarters at Vizianagaram as per G.O.Ms.No.700/Revenue (U) Department. District of North Eastern Andhra Pradesh in Southern India. It is located about 18 km inland from the Bay of Bengal, and 52 km northeast of Visakhapatnam.
The Vizianagaram district is a northern coastal district of Andhra Pradesh. The town of Vizianagaram is the district headquarters. The district is bounded on the east by the district of Srikakulam, southwest by the district of Visakhapatnam, southeast by the Bay of Bengal, and northwest by the districts of Koraput, Rayagada and Gunupur of Odisha State.
The Vizianagaram district is very peaceful in view of Law and Order, Communal.
Sri P. Venkayya, I.P.S. was the 1st Superintendent of Police, Vizianagaram and so far, 27 IPS officers worked in the district as Superintendents of Police.

The Vizianagaram district is divided into 03 Police Sub-Divisions with 10 Circles and 41 Law and Order Police Stations, 01 Central Crime Station, 01 Women PS, 01 Traffic PS, 02 Outposts.</p
01 Marine PS also exists for Coastal security along the 29 KMs of Coastal belt in the district.
Recently, the district Police has launched a “Police Command Control” in the Police Control Room, Vizianagaram.
